Getting Glocal – The Baltic Sea Region Since 1989

This content was developed during a workshop at the EUSTORY Next Generation Summit 2019 "Winds of Change - Transitions in Europe" from 15 to 19 October 2019 in Berlin. The Summit brought together 120 participants from Europe and beyond who worked together with experts from the fields of academia, journalism, education and arts to look at and figure out the chances and challenges connected to political transitions.

The transitions following 1989 had a huge impact on the states surrounding the Baltic Sea. The fall of the Soviet Union and the following re-emergence of some independent nation states was accompanied by tension, rivalry and struggles for regional hegemony. At the same time, transitions opened the way for new forms of cooperation connecting the regions surrounding the Baltic Sea.

We went beyond individual nation states and explored a current trend in historical research by looking at spatial concepts, geopolitics and transnational cooperation. How is this common space produced and reproduced in the political, economic and cultural sphere and how does it affect people’s lives?

Using tools and techniques from international politics and diplomacy, we got to the roots of the regional cooperation of the Baltic Sea States and identified how growing together as a region enables individual states to find global perspectives on regional issues. We also contributed to the region-building milestones of the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS) for the coming 30 years until 2049 and brought them to the stage in a multi-faceted performance.
