Mariam, Mikael, Ani, and Nikoloz critically examined historical inaccuracies and manipulative storytelling the sports drama “Three Seconds” (2017) about the Soviet basketball team’s victory over the United States in 1972. Participants discussed how the story structure, the lack of convincing protagonists’ motivations, and deliberate historical inaccuracies promote the message of unquestioned self-sacrifice to a harsh and demanding Motherland that offers little in return.

They experimented with NotebookLM AI to produce a podcast. The AI hosts were given prompts to examine the discrepancies in “Three Seconds”, a film that is not “a flag-waving propaganda” but works more subtly. What significance do the historical inaccuracies depicted in the film have, for instance? What does the choice of words in certain dialogues reveal? And how does the portrayal of the Soviet system support the main message of the film? Find out more in this podcast.
