Uncovering Realities: History and Storytelling in Media

This content was created at the EUSTORY Next Generation Summit 2024 "En:countering Divides" from 23 to 27 October 2024 in Riga. The Summit brought together 120 participants from 23 countries in Europe and beyond to explore the historical roots of current divides and find ways to overcome polarization within countries and across borders.

What does it need to turn a miniature grenadier, an Armenian banknote, self-made Danish sweaters and a Czech tricolore into the protagonists of a gripping story? Why is it essential to create media content that does not distort history? What are the secrets of journalistic suspense? During this workshop, young participants dealt with challenges and chances coming along with journalism these days.

15 participants from 12 countries gathered in the Latvian capital to bring their local or family stories to life and make them known. They reflected, shared insights, conducted conversations and applied what they learned to what will now become their first blog posts for the EUSTORY History Campus.

Sensitized by a session on media literacy conducted by the Baltic Centre for Media Excellence and inspired by the Latvian TV programme, “It Happened Here“, participants were able to transform their personal gadget into a journalistic piece reflecting history. And experienced: It is not easy to bring a story to life with words, edit drafts, and carry out a panel discussion in front of more than 100 people. But it is doable!
