Staging Conflict: Coexistence in Challenging Times

This content was created at the EUSTORY Next Generation Summit 2024 "En:countering Divides" from 23 to 27 October 2024 in Riga. The Summit brought together 120 participants from 23 countries in Europe and beyond to explore the historical roots of current divides and find ways to overcome polarization within countries and across borders.

How to (re-)act in everyday conflict situations? What lessons can we learn from the past to respond to injustice with confidence and solidarity?

In this workshop, 14 participants from 13 countries used the imaginative scope of theatre to explore methods for advocacy, resistance and creating dialogue across borders.

Bringing their personal experiences with clashing standpoints, the group learnt techniques of forum theatre and improvisation to explore new possibilities of conflict resolution: What happens when intervening in an unjust situation? How to show solidarity and raise awareness for discrimination at the right time? By creating stage conflict scenarios in small groups, they developed useful methods of civic engagement to take home for everyday life.

I learnt that the process is sometimes more important than the result
